Transition Services

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does KSD Transition Services do for my child and me?

A. Transition Services at KSD are in place to assist parents/guardians and students in planning for the future after graduation from KSD. Transition covers all areas of an individual's life. Self advocacy, educational and career exploration, workplace skills, knowledge and skills to live independently, and knowledge of the community in which a student lives and resources available.

Q. Does KSD Transition Services find summer jobs for my child?

A. Transition Services at KSD will refer a student to the Career Center for assistance in this area.

Q. Does KSD Transition Services find post-secondary placements for my child?

A. Transition Services at KSD involves the Career Center and many resources when planning for a students life after graduation. Students may use a variety of resources in this planning such as Vocational Rehabilitation as one example. Transition Services will work with students on an individual basis depending upon the needs of the student.

Q. What is VR?

A. VR stands for Vocational Rehabilitation, also called Voc Rehab. This is a valuable resource for our students at KSD. For more information you may go to the website: www@srskansas.org , go to Services and then click under Adult services for Vocational Rehabilitation.

Q. How do I get involved with VR services for my child?

A. Typically at KSD the transition facilitator will send home the application packet during the summer prior to a student's senior year. The student and parent/guardian completes the packet. The transition facilitator then is responsible for all correspondence and meetings after that initial application process. The only service a student will receive from VR prior to graduation is the testing which takes three days and is done at the Overland Park office during a student's senior year.

Q. Why does my child need to be involved with VR?

A. VR is a valuable resource for a person with a disability. For every person that comes to VR for services and is approved, the goal is for successful employment. In order to achieve this for each individual a plan of action is written. Each plan is individually designed. VR services are different for every person based on their individual need.

Q. When do I contact VR?

A. As a parent or student you may contact VR at any time to ask questions. At KSD we typically assist you with this contact process during the summer prior to your child's senior year of high school.

Q. Where are the offices of VR located?

A. There are several offices throughout the state of Kansas. Our students use the office in Overland Park, Kansas. After students graduate they may transfer their file to an office closer to home. The address of the Overland Park office is:

Overland Park Area Office
Kansas Rehabilitation Services
8915 Lenexa Drive
Overland Park, Kansas 66214-3228

Q. When are the college entrance exams?

A. Students at KSD take the ACT test, which is required for admission by most colleges. The ACT exam is offered two times a year with extended times and signed directions. Our student's take the exam at Olathe North High School. It is offered in December and April. The application packets are available in the transition facilitator's office. After a student fills out the application, the application and the money should be returned to the transition office by the deadline listed on the application envelope. A copy of the IEP is required to document the need for extended time and signed directions. A copy of a student's audiogram is also required. The transition facilitator completes these requirements.

Q. How much does it cost to take the ACT?

A. The required fee this year is $29.00. This can be paid by check, money order, or some credit cards are accepted.

Q. Do I have to take the ACT in order to attend Johnson County Community College?

A. No, the ACT is not required. However JCCC does require that you take a Placement test in English and Math before you can obtain a degree.
