Yakymiv is the director of the Vyhoda Educational Center in the Ivano-Fransivsk region of the Ukraine. This program provides an education to students who are Deaf/ HH, have visual impairments, or those with a variety of diagnosis. She greatly enjoyed her visit and is bringing many ideas back to the students of the school from KSD. I thank all teachers and staff members for their time answering questions, demonstrating equipment, and allowing last minute observations. My special thanks to Oksana, Larissa, Yuri, and Mr. Bills for their time and interest in our program. If you are interested in learning about their school, please feel free to review my copy of their school brochure in Related Services.

Letters from Uganda
Moved 5 Feb 2010
KSD students are anxiously awaiting the first exchange of letters with our pen pals at the Integrated Child Education Center (ICEC) from the country of Uganda. Leslie Caldwell was contacted by the United Nations in August and four KSD teachers (Beth Yoder, Daniel Allen, Mike Hernandez, and Jodine Trout) have decided to involve their classrooms in this project. The Rwenzori Association of Parents of Children with Disabilities (RAPCD) opened the doors to the ICEC in January 2010 to offer education and rehablitation services to blind and Deaf children in the district of Kasese. The center is the first of its kind and is answering a very big need of special education to the young ones. The Center that started in 2009 as a play centre for all kinds of children aims at filling gaps in the education system for special needs children in Kasese district and offer holistic education aiming at social, economic, spiritual and emotional development of all kinds of children from different back grounds. Keep watching for updates about our letters, which should be arriving any day now. I'd like to thank, Maali Wilson, for her continued contact and committment to our students. We are looking forward to meeting the students of Kasese.

Hats for Haiti
Moved 5 Feb 2010
Like so many people, KSD students and staff were touched by the plight of people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake that stuck their already impoverish country on January 12, 2010. Our first thought was to collect food and clothing items, however government and relief organizations were telling people the most effective and immediate way to help would be to send a cash donation. So that's what we decided to do. Students made special collection envelopes that asked for a $1.00 donation. The response from students and staff has been overwhelming. Many high school students and most of the staff contributed on the spot. Other donations have been coming in daily. "Hat's for Haiti" is a reward and an outward expression of our coming together to do something to help others. Students and staff who made a donation will be permitted and encouraged to wear a hat to school on Friday (something not allowed in the dress code). We are very pleased and proud of the generous response for this project from our KSD family to assist Haitian families in need. KSD students raised $321.05 to donate to Haiti relief efforts.

News from Dr. Maile
Moved 10 Dec 2009
The Governor's Facilities Closure and Realignment Commission convened on Monday, September 28 to receive a report on the costs of moving the School for the Blind to the campus of the School for the Deaf. They were informed that the renovations and new construction needed would cost from 26 to 32 million dollars. The Commission subsequently agreed to recommend that both schools remain in their present locations. In addition, they asked that both schools develop and implement cost savings by sharing personnel and administration, with an anticipated savings of $400,000 - $500,000. A reorganization which will result in some shared responsibilities for the two schools will be considered during the next few weeks. This is a positive result for both schools. Your testimony, letters, e-mails, and phone calls have moved us in a positive direction. Now we can continue to move forward with a primary focus on our school programming and our outreach services.

The old number (913-971-5323) is out of service and no longer in use. The Olathe Police would like to encourage the members of our Deaf community to dial 911 for all of their law enforcement needs. This will include emergency and non-emergency situations. This system will apply only to those who are Deaf. Individuals wanting to contact the Olathe Police for non-emergency calls for service can continue to use the non-emergency number (971-7455) or 911 for any emergency.

News from Dr. Maile
Moved 29 Sep 2009
The Facilities Closure and Realignment Commission convened on Monday, August 17 to deliberate options for the Kansas School for the Deaf and the Kansas School for the Blind. It was made clear that closure will not be a recommendation. The intention is that the programming currently provided for both deaf students and blind students continue and/or increase; the need for expanded outreach services was noted. There appeared to be a consensus that the two schools should be located on the same campus (in Olathe); one member questioned whether the cost of such a move would be warranted in relation to the savings which would accrue. Another member would like a community living option (in a private home) to be considered as an option for younger students residing in the dorm. The Commission Chairperson expressed a need for more details related to the mechanics of co-locating and related costs before a recommendation is developed. They have requested additional information regarding renovations and new construction which would accommodate such a move. This will be assembled during the next month.
The testimony provided during the March and July public hearings plus related letters and e-mails has had a positive impact on the Commission and has influenced their decision to remove closure from possible options. Commission members understand and appreciate the services provided by both schools. When further information is available and/or a final recommendation is made, an update will appear here on this website.
At the next meeting of the FCRC on September 28 they will be receiving information related to space and cost issues if the School for the Blind were to move to the School for the Deaf campus. This is not a time for public testimony, however, spectators are welcome. The meeting will be in room 545N of the State Capitol, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We are scheduled on the agenda from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you are in need of an interpreter, contact the FCRC at closure.commission@ks.gov or (785) 296-3011.

Mary Lou Garton
Moved 5 Aug 2009
Mary Lou Garton, who helped teach sign language to so many people in Olathe, died July 26, 2009. She was a true pioneer in deaf education, touching the lives of hundreds throughout Olathe as well as the state of Kansas, by teaching sign language and working closely with parents and families.
She and her husband, Bill, moved to Olathe so they could enroll their daughter at the Kansas School for the Deaf. This was at a time with sign language was not widely used at the school for instruction. Though she had been encouraged by her daughter's teachers not to sign because it might interfer with her daughter's speech production, Mary Lou chose to continue learning sign language, recognizing the importance of fluent communication.
Mary Lou joined the staff at KSD in 1975 and worked at the school for 15 years. Throughout her tenure, she taught sign language on campus and across the state during the summer, in addition to working with parents and families. She also volunteered her services as interpreter for many years in Olathe, teaching sign language in various city departments.
Mary Lou was the quiet driving force behind the founding of the Deaf Cultural Center, which proudly houses the William J. Marra Museum of Deaf History and Deaf Culture. Her support and love for everyone connected with the Deaf Community was always evident and her passing will be missed by the many, many friends and families that love her. She has left a legacy with the center, as well as a challenge to continue the mission she lived passionately throughout her life.
Memorial donations in Mary Lou Garton's honor can be made to the
Deaf Cultural Center, 455 E. Park Street, Olathe, Kansas 66061.
