The Proclamation of Deaf Awareness Week

By: Michael Hesser

The mayor, Michael Copeland invited some students and Lisa Casparian to come to the city hall on September 3, 2007. Mike Hesser, Hana Mardis, Kylei Brooks, and Haley Kyser were the students willing to go and accept the proclamation. Unfortunately, the mayor couldn’t make it but he had a replacement taking over.

The replacement had us come and accept the proclamation and speak a few words of our gratitude. We thanked the mayor on behalf for the community and KSD. We were pleased to accept and have the Deaf Awareness Week be set for the community to learn of the deaf culture.

In the speech, Copeland included information of Deaf Sunday: A Taste of Olathe. He supported the event and our Marra museum and the Deaf Cultural Center. We were glad that the community was willing to learn more about our culture. We want to spread the word of our culture and our equal life to all religion and cultures!

We left with a frame of a signed proclamation signed by the mayor. The frame will be presented to KSD’s superintendent on September 4, 2007. Thanks to all supporting Deaf Awareness week.
