News from Dr. Maile

Updated 13 Jan 2010

The Kansas State Board of Education accepted and supported the report of Interim Commissioner Diane DeBacker which includes operation of KSD and KSB under one superintendent. Madeleine Burkindine will be the KSD Superintendent effective 7-1-10. This arrangement will be reviewed in two years and a determination made as to its continuation. Ms. Burkindine and her staff are already taking ASL classes, and are looking forward to their participation with KSD. The remainder of the school year will provide time for a smooth transition. KSD will continue to fulfill its role as a quality center program for deaf children and a statewide resource on deafness.

Calendar

Hello KSD parents! I am the parent representative on the Calendar Committee for next school year and would like to get your feedback. There are 2 calendars containing 180 days for teachers with 174 student contact/school days and 2 options containing 3 additional staff in-service days posted here on the KSD website. Unless funding changes, we are likely to be using one of the 180-day options. Please take a look at the options (1 2 3 4) and email your feedback to me at: kwhesser1@yahoo.com. Please send your feedback by Monday afternoon March 22. Thanks for your interest!

H1N1 information

Updated 4 Dec 2009

Our infirmary is staying on top of news concerning the H1N1 flu. Here is a page from the KS Dept of Health with ASL videos about the virus. The NCDHR in Rochester also has good information to review, and a video in ASL. It is unlikely that KSD will receive any seasonal flu vaccine for the 2009 -2010 school year.

If you have the opportunity to get a seasonal flu shot at another location, we suggest you get the vaccine at the earliest possible opportunity. If your child receives a flu shot outside of KSD, please contact the infirmary to let us know.

Parents and staff are encouraged to contact their doctor or local health department for more info about the H1N1 flu vaccine. Johnson County Health department is offering H1N1 vaccines free of charge.

We continue to strongly encourage all staff and students to wash their hands frequently, eat healthy, gets lots of sleep and cover their coughs and sneezes. Please contact the infirmary if you have any questions.

Check out deafmd.org for great health news for the deaf community, including this announcement regarding H1N1.

Sincerely,

Annie Wallace, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager KSD Infirmary
