What is Service Learning? It's having organized experiences that integrate all high school students' academic learning with service to learn in ways that serve to reinforce and enrich one another. What it really means is combining classroom work with service and action to learn by doing and giving.
All high school students must complete their service learning
hours as follows:
Seniors - 26 hours (13 on-campus & 13 off-campus)
Juniors - 20 hours (10 on-campus & 10 off-campus)
Sophomore - 12 hours (6 on-campus & 6 off-campus)
Freshmen - 6 hours (3 on-campus & 3 off-campus)
All service learning projects must be done after school hours.
Here are some of the examples that the students can do to earn
their service learning hours.
English students respond to Santa letters.
Deaf Studies students help teach ASL.
History students interview senior citizens about their experiences,
then compile a community history booklet.
Math students tutor younger students in math skills.
Computer students can train senior citizen or others in computer
use.
Wood working students help build things for the community.
Social studies students can collect food or clothing for the poor
in their home communities.
Construction trade students can do painting projects.
Career Training students can help sell food, tickets, etc.
There are endless possibilities.
