Family Services

Objectives

Involve parents and families of children who are deaf as important participants in the educational process and strengthen their skills as contributors to communication, language, social, and cognitive growth.

Values

Every family is unique: they define themselves.
Implications: Family support should be individualized. A variety of services and information, in a variety of formats should be available.

A need is not a need unless it is recognized by the family.
Implication: Families should receive timely, honest, complete, and understandable information.

Services should be sensitive to family needs.
Implications: Services should be scheduled at times and locations comfortable to families. Services should provide families with options for mutual support from other families.

All family members and all family needs are equally important.
Implications: A variety of options for services for all family members should be available. Families are encouraged to pace themselves and to balance their child's needs with their own and other family members.

Families are constantly changing.
Implication: Services should be flexible and responsive to changing events in the family.

Guiding Principle

The family is the ultimate decision maker with respect to themselves and their child.

Home visits, presentations, weekend workshops, meetings in the evening or on weekends, lending library, newsletter, classes.
